#Giving Tuesday

December 4, 2019

It’s hard to believe that NYC Autism Charter Schools are almost 15 years old!  We have grown steadily since first opening our doors back in 2005 – providing personalized instruction to students as well as support and training for their families, offering professional and career development to staff, and sharing practices with other schools and organizations (in NYC and beyond) in an effort to help them better serve the autism community.  In 2017, we opened NYC Autism Charter School Bronx, allowing us to serve a whole new community of families in need of an appropriate education for their children.

The learning that takes place within our walls is remarkable and goes far beyond the bounds of traditional education.  Students are learning to speak and communicate for the first time, to tolerate medical visits and sit still for a haircut, to take turns with friends, to use a restroom independently, to hold down a job and, in some cases, travel to and from on their own.  These are just a few of the many, many skills being taught at NYC Autism Charter Schools every day – skills that are tailored to meet each student’s unique needs and help them reach their unique potential.  But one of the things that makes me the proudest as I walk through our halls is the love and joy and happiness that I see on the faces of our students and staff.  It’s infectious!
